NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIAN STUDENTS (NANS)
JOINT CAMPUS COUNCIL, ONDO AXIS
UNIFIED AND REDEFINED ERA
Ref. No.: NANS/EX/OD/09/18
September 18th, 2026
The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), JCC Ondo State Axis yesterday engaged the management of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO) over concerns raised by the Students’ Union Government regarding the recently introduced ₦5,000 weekly add-on fee imposed on students who delay payment of their school fees.
The meeting, which was held with key members of the Polytechnic’s management, had in attendance the Acting Rector, Acting Registrar, Dean of Student Affairs, and other principal officers of the institution.
During the engagement, the management explained that the measure was introduced in response to persistent delays and defaults in the payment of school fees by some students, particularly in circumstances where the existing ₦15,000 late-registration penalty had not sufficiently encouraged timely payment.
While acknowledging the concerns and rationale presented by the management, the leadership of NANS Ondo expressed the need for a balanced approach that would encourage students to meet their financial obligations without creating additional burdens, particularly for students who may already be facing financial difficulties.
Following extensive deliberations, a compromise was reached.
Management assured the leadership of NANS Ondo that the matter would be reviewed and further consideration given to the implementation of the policy. Importantly, the ₦5,000 weekly add-ons that had already accrued/been imposed on affected students are to be removed, subject to the implementation process by the institution.
The leadership of NANS Ondo appreciates the management of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, for its openness, responsiveness and willingness to engage constructively on issues affecting students.
This engagement further reinforces the commitment of NANS Ondo to constructive advocacy, meaningful dialogue and the protection of students’ interests across institutions in Ondo State.
NANS Ondo remains committed to ensuring that the voice and welfare of students remain central to every stakeholder engagement.
