The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Joint Campus Council, Ondo State Axis, wishes to inform the entire Nigerian student community, stakeholders and the general public that the planned protest scheduled for Tuesday, 18th August 2026, in Akure has been suspended following a constructive engagement with the Ondo State Government.
Earlier today, NANS JCC Ondo State Axis raised its voice against the prolonged disruption of academic activities and the hardship being experienced by students across the state. Our position was clear: the future of Nigerian students must not be left on hold.
Following our concerns and demands, the leadership of NANS JCC Ondo State Axis, led by Comrade Adekanye Mayomi Adeboye (INEC), engaged the Ondo State Government on the issues affecting our students and the need for urgent intervention.
We are pleased to announce that the government has responded with significant commitments aimed at strengthening our tertiary institutions and addressing some of the issues at the centre of the current industrial crisis.
Among the resolutions announced by the Ondo State Government are:
1. 60% INCREASE IN MONTHLY SUBVENTIONS
The Governor of Ondo State, His Excellency, Hon. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has approved an immediate 60 percent increase in the monthly subventions to all state-owned tertiary institutions in Ondo State.
This intervention is expected to strengthen the institutions’ capacity to meet their obligations, support prompt payment of salaries and improve the overall learning environment.
2. IMPLEMENTATION OF THE FG/UNIONS AGREEMENT
The Governor has also approved the immediate implementation of the agreement reached between the Federal Government and the relevant university unions across all applicable state-owned tertiary institutions.
We recognise these steps as important interventions towards addressing the welfare concerns of academic staff, restoring industrial harmony and creating an environment conducive to uninterrupted academic activities.
OUR POSITION AS NANS JCC ONDO STATE AXIS
As the umbrella body representing Nigerian students across campuses in Ondo State, our responsibility is not merely to protest, but to engage, negotiate and demand concrete solutions whenever the interests of our students are threatened.
We therefore welcome the intervention announced by the Ondo State Government and appreciate the willingness to engage with the student body.
Consequently, the planned protest scheduled for 18th August 2026 is hereby SUSPENDED.
However, this suspension should not be misconstrued as a withdrawal of our demands or a relaxation of our vigilance.
We expect the resolutions announced by the government to be implemented fully and without unnecessary delay, particularly the approved 60% increase in subventions and the implementation of the FG/Unions agreement.
We equally call on the management of our tertiary institutions and relevant stakeholders to ensure that these interventions translate into tangible improvements in the welfare of staff and, most importantly, the academic experience of students.
We commend the Ondo State Government for choosing dialogue and concrete intervention at this critical moment.
Our students have suffered enough disruptions. Our classrooms must reopen. Our academic calendars must regain stability. Our future cannot remain on hold.
NANS JCC Ondo State Axis will continue to monitor the implementation of these resolutions and will remain committed to constructive engagement with the government, institutions and other relevant stakeholders in the interest of Nigerian students.
This is not the end of our advocacy; it is a step towards achieving the result we seek.
